The FDA first approved the use of titanium dioxide in food in 1966, following its 1960 removal (along with the removal of other color additives) from the agency's original Generally Recognized as Safe list. In 1977, titanium dioxide joined the list of color additives that are exempt from certification, which means titanium dioxide doesn't have to be listed on the packaging of every product it's used in, Faber noted.

It's also used in sunscreens as a UV filtering ingredient, helping to protect a person's skin by blocking absorption the ultraviolet light that can cause sunburn and cancer.

The additives that received a “no safety concern” conclusion based on current estimated dietary exposure are as follows:

A.B. 418, authored by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-San Fernando Valley), will soon receive its final votes in the state legislature. If the bill is signed into law, the Golden State would be the first in the nation to ban these toxic chemicals from bread, salad dressings, frozen pizzas and other popular food items.

Jinan Yuxing Rutile Titanium Dioxide R-818 is a rutile titanium dioxide pigment coated with inorganic silicon aluminum and organic surface treatment. It has good gloss and hiding power, high weather resistance and good dispersibility.
Scope of application: plastic steel profiles, coil paint, powder coatings, rubber, masterbatch, etc.

In some studies, E171 was given to animals in drinking water without the stabilizers that keep E171 suspended in the liquid. Without stabilizers, E171 can settle and prevent the ingredient from combining with surrounding ingredients.

Nano-sized P25TiO₂NPs were kindly donated by Dr. Scaiano, Ottawa University (Canada). Riboflavin (vitamin B2) was from Sigma and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and KBr (for IR pills) were from Cicarelli. Base cream for the animal experiments was purchased from Todo Droga and the LED panel was built ad hoc.

Assessment of biocompatibility

Because of its unique properties, titanium dioxide is widely used and is well known in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Titanium dioxide was one of the first materials to be used in nanotechnology products. However, the potential toxicity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles is a controversial subject. Many cosmetic companies use titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Because of its bright whiteness, it is used in products such as paints, coatings, papers, inks, toothpaste, face powder, and food colouring.

Genotoxicity Assessment 

In food products, E171 is not a singular ingredient; it’s always combined with other ingredients (e.g., proteins and fats) in the food product. Digesting food is a slow process for the body compared to drinking a beverage, which passes much faster through the body.
